IThe Inventathon will be held in conjunction with Innovation Week on October 17-18, 2014, with a kick-off event on October 15. It will be open to all UCLA students, staff, trainees, faculty, and post-doctoral fellows from all backgrounds ranging from engineering, to business, to biomedical research, to art and design. All participants will register prior to the event and individuals will be placed into teams. During the 24-hour event, teams made up of UCLA affiliates will work with professionals in the biomedical device industry to develop a solution to an unmet medical need. Teams are challenged to devise a solution, design, and build their inventions within the 24-hour period. Industry professionals will be available during the 24-hour event to answer questions and act as mentors to the student teams. Cash and in-kind prizes, from other sponsors, will be awarded to the first, second, and third place teams, primarily to attract top talent to this event.Inventathon will give participants the opportunity to learn through the act of creating, while developing relationships with industry professionals and peers from different backgrounds here at UCLA. Furthermore, this event could generate new entrepreneurial opportunities and foster greater collaboration across disciplines. Inventathon will be a fast-paced and invigorating way to start the new school year with an innovation and entrepreneurship focus.
The 2013 event attracted 121 registrations, 21 mentors, and 13 competing teams with 3 companies formed and 2 IP filings / disclosures at the close of the event. Participation was found from all campus constituents, leading to multi-discliplinary collaboration. We hope to dramatically increase these numbers for the 2014 event and expect over 300 attendees.
